Wednesday and Thursday were wonderful days at Carlton Elementary Public School. Instead of bells, songs come across the speakers and morning classes begin. At 10 am tea occurs. All children, approximately 900, go to the playground yard where 6 teachers supervise them. All wear hats. No hat-no play. Children learn early on to protect themselves from the sun. While 6 teachers supervise the well behaved youngsters, the other faculty have tea in the lounge.
Ms. Rasmushen, the deputy principal (Asst. Principal) spent the day with us as we visited classrooms. Kindergarten was my favorite. One little boy walked up to me and said "Excuse me miss. Why are you here"? He was 5. Children are dismissed at 3 pm. Some are picked up by their parents, others walk home. Carlton is a neighborhood school. It was quite a day.
Afterwards we rode the train back to Bondi and gathered 8 of the students for dinner. Ken found a wonderful Thai restaurant and we had an absolute blast.
Today Keisha and I went to the regional principal's meeting which was held at a football sports club. The sports club was used because of its central location. We met many principals and were introduced to the group. The regional director, gentleman over all of NSW schools was so excited to have us here. It was a very special day.
Hope the pictures can capture some of the incredible learning experience we have had. I'm done in for the day.
I am so jealous Dr. Reames, I love the pictures and can't wait to talk to you guys in person upon your return and hear more about your experience. Enjoy
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you all are having a wonderful time! I find it interesting that teachers fund the schools with part of their salaries! That is amazing! I also found it interesting that there are no school boards, etc. that teachers are selected for leadership based on their interest in it, AND they are supported through training programs. There are many similarities to our own education system, but the differences are very interesting! I am enjoying reading about your experiences. Thanks!
